FAQs

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

For most people, laser hair removal does not hurt. However, it all depends on your threshold for pain. Most people say that it feels like snapping a rubber band against the skin. But if you are overly sensitive to pain, you may experience some minor discomfort. The good thing about the treatment is that, as soon as it is over, the pain is gone.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal involves the use of laser pulses. These pulses emit light into the skin that destroys the root and follicle of the hair. When the root and follicle are destroyed, hair can no longer grow. For this process to work, the hair must be targeted during an active growth phase. We recommend a series of 6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

Results may vary from person to person. We recommend a touch-up treatment every six to twelve months. Results vary depending on your hair type and skin type. Completing the series of 6 treatments in the recommended time frame is also extremely important in order to give our clients the best possible outcome.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Get Laser Hair Removal?

There is no specific age minimum, but it is important to wait until you have gone through puberty to begin laser treatments. Females should not begin treatment unless they have already started their menstrual cycle. Generally, sixteen is a good age for people to begin laser hair removal. We do also require a parent to be present at the visits and to sign the consent form. If you are younger than sixteen, call the office and schedule a consultation.

How Do You Prepare for Laser Hair Removal Treatments?
  • No tanning/sun exposure for 2 weeks – If you have been in the sun/tanning bed in the past 2 weeks prior to your treatment, PLEASE INFORM YOUR TECHNICIAN BEFORE YOUR TREATMENT
  • No topical Retin-A / Tri-Luma for 2 weeks (to the treated area)
  • Let us know if you have a tendency for Cold Sores – we will call in a prescription for Zovirax (anti-viral medication) to begin 3 days before your treatment & continue for 4 days after your treatment to help prevent a cold sore.
  • Please inform your technician of any tattoos in the area to be treated (including permanent cosmetics) as we cannot treat these areas.
  • You may shave the area to be treated up to 48 hours prior to treatment. Please do not shave on the day of your treatment. NO WAXING, PLUCKING, OR BLEACHING the area to be treated during the entire series.
What Should I Expect After Laser Hair Removal?

You may feel a mild sunburn feeling in the treated area for up to 24 hours following your treatment. Ice packs may help with the discomfort. Ibuprofen or Tylenol may be taken to help with the discomfort as well. Please let our office know if the discomfort lasts longer than 48 hours following your treatment.
You may have some mild swelling in the treated area following your treatment. This should resolve in 24-48 hours. Avoid exertional activity immediately following treatment as this may cause an increase in swelling. It is recommended to apply 30 SPF or higher at least 15 minutes prior to casual sun exposure on the treated area. If the treated area will be exposed to prolonged periods of sunlight, please reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or as needed. Direct sun is not advised for at least 2 weeks after treatment.
Please note that hair appears to ‘grow’ as it is expelled. The hair will spontaneously fall out within 2-3 weeks of treatment.
After your initial series, you will most likely require maintenance treatments. Heredity is a major factor in determining the frequency of maintenance treatments.
